Emergencies are the part of the General Standards exam you cannot fake with on-the-job habit, because the whole point is knowing what to do before you have ever had to do it. Texas tests this material for a simple reason: a spilled concentrate near a storm drain or a coworker who just swallowed pesticide gives you no time to look things up. The exam wants proof that the right sequence — protect yourself, stop the problem, keep it from spreading, get the right help — is already in your head.
The good news is that this topic is compact and predictable. Nearly every question comes down to two ideas: pesticide spills are managed with the ordered "three C's" (control, contain, clean up), and pesticide exposures are managed by the product label's first aid statement plus a poison control center. Be Ready Before Anything Goes Wrong
Emergency response starts long before an emergency. You should know where the label and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for every product you carry are kept, because they are your instructions when something spills or someone is exposed. Keep emergency contact information — including a poison control center — where you and your crew can find it fast.
Carry a basic spill kit whenever you transport, store, mix, or load pesticides. A practical kit is simple and cheap compared to what an uncontained spill costs.
A standard spill kit includes:
- Personal protective equipment (at minimum chemical-resistant gloves, footwear, and eye protection)
- Absorbent material such as cat litter, sand, or commercial absorbent pads
- A shovel or broom and dustpan for collecting contaminated material
- Heavy-duty plastic bags or a sealable container for the waste
- Something to warn people away from the area
The Three C's: Control, Contain, Clean Up
Spill response is taught as three ordered steps, and the order is the point. You cannot effectively confine a spill while the container is still pouring, and you cannot clean up material that is still spreading. Put on proper PPE before you touch anything — a spill response that contaminates the responder creates a second emergency.
Control the source first. Set a leaking container upright, plug the leak if you safely can, or put the leaking container inside a larger sound one. Keep people and animals away from the area, and stay at the scene rather than leaving a spill unattended.
Contain the spill next. Confine the material to the smallest possible area and, above all, keep it away from water — storm drains, ditches, wells, and streams. Surround and cover liquid with absorbent material or build a containment dike of soil or absorbent ahead of the flow. Never hose a spill down with water: dilution spreads the contamination and washing pesticide into a drain is exactly the outcome containment exists to prevent.
Clean up last. Once the liquid is absorbed, collect the contaminated absorbent, place it in a sealed, labeled container, and dispose of it as you would excess pesticide, following label directions. Decontaminate the spill surface and any tools you used, and clean or dispose of contaminated PPE. For a large spill, or one that reaches or threatens water, do not try to handle everything alone — get help and notify the appropriate authorities.
The Label's First Aid Statement Comes First
Every pesticide label carries a first aid statement — historically called the statement of practical treatment — with product-specific directions for exposure to the eyes, to the skin, by inhalation, and by swallowing. When someone is exposed, this is the first place you look, because first aid steps genuinely differ from product to product.
The exam repeatedly contrasts the label against unreliable substitutes: an internet search, what an experienced coworker remembers doing, the sprayer's owner manual. None of those is product-specific or authoritative. The label is, which is also why you take the label — or the whole container, if you can do it safely — with you when seeking medical help. It tells medical personnel the active ingredient and the recommended treatment.
A poison control center is the label's partner in an emergency. Its staff can interpret the product information and give expert, real-time direction, especially for swallowing exposures where the wrong move can cause harm.
First Aid by Route of Exposure
First aid tracks the four routes of exposure you learned in the safety topic: dermal, ocular, inhalation, and oral. In every case the priorities are the same — stop the exposure, decontaminate, and get medical direction with the label in hand. General guidance by route:
The oral route carries the classic exam trap: never induce vomiting unless the label or a poison control center specifically directs it. Some pesticides, such as corrosive products or those in petroleum-based solvents, do additional damage coming back up. The same caution applies to folk "neutralizers" like milk or oil — do not give anything unless the label or medical guidance says to.
- Skin (dermal): remove contaminated clothing right away and wash the skin thoroughly with soap and water. Since dermal contact is the largest share of most applicators' exposure, fast decontamination matters most here.
- Eyes (ocular): flush the eye gently with a stream of clean water, keep flushing for the time the label directs, and get medical attention. Eyes absorb pesticides quickly and are easily injured.
- Inhalation: get the victim to fresh air immediately, loosen tight clothing, and avoid exposing yourself in the process — an unprotected rescuer in an enclosed, contaminated space becomes the second victim.
- Swallowed (oral): read the label's first aid statement, call a poison control center, and follow their instructions exactly.
Recognize Overexposure and Act Immediately
First aid only helps if you recognize that an exposure is happening. Early warning signs of overexposure to many pesticides include headache, nausea, excessive sweating, blurred vision, and muscle twitching. Be aware that some of these symptoms resemble other illnesses, such as heat stress, which is one more reason to get medical evaluation rather than guessing in the field.
The correct response to symptoms is always the same and always immediate: stop the application, get away from the source, decontaminate — remove contaminated clothing and wash — and seek medical help with the product label available. Poisoning can progress quickly, so waiting to see whether symptoms get worse, finishing the job first, or masking symptoms with over-the-counter medicine are all dangerous and all wrong.
Tie this back to prevention. The label's PPE requirements, careful mixing and loading habits, and a stocked spill kit are what keep the first aid statement something you study rather than something you use.

Exam tips
- On three C's questions, the order is what's tested. Expect a distractor that lists the same real steps shuffled (contain, clean up, control) — control always comes first, because you must stop the source before confining or collecting anything.
- Any answer that moves pesticide toward water is wrong. Hosing a spill down, diluting it, or rinsing it into a storm drain are classic wrong options; correct containment answers keep the spill small, dry it with absorbent, and block its path to drains.
- For swallowing scenarios, 'immediately induce vomiting' is nearly always the trap. The correct answer reads the label, calls poison control, and induces vomiting only if specifically directed — corrosives and petroleum-solvent products cause more harm coming back up.
- When a question asks where to find emergency instructions, the product label beats every alternative offered — internet searches, a coworker's memory, and equipment manuals are recurring distractors.
- Look for 'with the label (or container) available' inside answer choices. Taking the label to medical personnel is a detail the exam uses to mark the fully correct option in exposure scenarios.
- Correct emergency answers act immediately. Options that wait for worse symptoms, finish the job first, or deal with a spill at the end of the day are automatically wrong, no matter how practical they sound.
